Finding the Inspiration to Do What You Need to Do In Your Life Through Encouragement and Love

Last year I went to a leadership camp where I was asked to perform many difficult physical and mental challenges. I was ready to quit many times, but one man in my group taught me what inspiration truly is.

Lee has Down's Syndrome. He is almost fifty years old, so he has already lived longer than expected. This man was a true inspiration to me and to the other forty-five people in our group.

Just walking up or down stairs is a challenge for Lee. He has a variety of physical limitations, as well as the mental ones. He does not communicate or get to know people easily. When my group first found out that Lee was going to part of our activities during that week many of them seemed disappointed. They felt that we would not have a chance against the other three teams. What we all learned during that week changed our lives.

  • Lee never gave up until he just could not do something physically. When he had to hike for a long distance he gave it all he could with our encouragement.
  • Lee loved the attention he got from all of us, especially from the women. We all need attention and encouragement to do our best.
  • Lee was open to trying new things. That week at camp meant that his routine and food choices would be disrupted. He adapted to the changes and made the best of it. We can all be more adaptable to changes in our lives and learn to just go with the flow.
  • Lee loved being part of a team. He showed us that one person can just do so much, but a team of people working together can accomplish miracles.
At the end of the week we were not surprised to hear that we were the winners. Lee had been an inspiration to us all that we can do anything with the love, help, encouragement and attention of others. He made us all slow down and go with the flow so that we did things in a timely fashion and not a hurried rush. There was not a dry eye in the house when Lee was awarded his medal at the end of camp for being a true warrior.
